Collectives

  • The 1870 Society is an LLC, the for-profit collective. It sold memberships and a subscription app, Next Level, and the money was for athlete deals. Its president, Todd Markiewicz, said in 2023 that 1870 handled football and the Olympic sports. THE Foundation, started by Brian Schottenstein and Cardale Jones, handled men’s and women’s basketball. The Foundation began as a 501(c)(3) in February 2022 and later moved the contracts into an LLC, THE Foundation Fund.

On3, Aug. 29, 2024, ranked the two of them No. 1. Ross Bjork said that year’s football roster cost $20 million. Sports Business Journal, Jan. 24, 2025, tied that roster to these two collectives. 1870’s reported deals that season were Denzel Burke, Quinshon Judkins, J.T. Tuimoloau, Cody Simon, and Seth McLaughlin. THE Foundation’s were Will Howard, Sonny Styles, and Caleb Downs. No per-player amounts were published.

On July 1, 2025, Ohio State replaced both collectives with Buckeye Sports Group, run by the athletic department and Learfield. Buckeye Sports Bulletin, July 2025. Founders stayed on as advisers. Subscriptions to The Foundation were still accepted. Bjork said the department would share $18 million in 2025–26 across football, both basketball teams, and women’s volleyball.

The Athletic, Sept. 16, 2026, put the 2026 football roster near $50 million, with Oregon, LSU, Miami, and Texas. That is the school check and the outside check together. USA Today named the same group on Aug. 25, 2026.
